The Plains Golf Course — Collective Review
Summary
The Plains Golf Course (historically known in part as The Fairways) in Cheney, Washington, is a privately owned 9-hole facility featuring rolling elevation, native wetlands, and the Plains Public House. Golfer sentiment across aggregate platforms is decidedly mixed, averaging roughly 3.7 out of 5 stars across hundreds of reviews on 18Birdies, GolfAdvisor/GolfNow, and Yelp. Many golfers appreciate the course's accessible, casual vibe and layout quirks, highlighting that it offers an enjoyable challenge characterized by water hazards on seven of nine holes, numerous doglegs, and undulating, fast-running greens that reward precise iron play. Scenic sunset vistas and the convenience of being just 10 minutes from downtown Spokane also receive frequent compliments. However, significant criticism centers on value and maintenance. Players frequently note that green fees and cart rentals have climbed too high for a 9-hole track, with several complaining that weekend rounds can become bottlenecked and exceed three hours. Course conditions draw polarized remarks: while the greens are often described as quick and well-kept, tee boxes, fairways, and roughs occasionally suffer from neglected turf care depending on the season. Overall, golfers view it as a fun, informal venue for a quick nine holes and casual post-round drinks, provided expectations regarding pricing and turf perfection are properly managed.
